Ileana Perez Velazquez – Reaching Out
Performed by Meghan Berindean, cello

Program Note by Ileana Perez Velazquez

This composition was written during the 2021 pandemic. It was inspired by the need to reach out to those we love that we could not hug, or visit, and the need to reach out to those who lost their lives in solitude, and their families. It is about reaching out to others for us to care about each other, and to reach out for peace during this difficult time.

Dig Deeper: Other Musical Works Expressing Emotions

Music gives people the opportunity to tell a story. Many composers use music as their medium of expressing their feelings and thoughts. Listen to a work by Holst and compare to this one.

Create and Make: Compose Your Own Piece

As reflected in Velazquez and Holst’s music, music can be inspired by events current and historical that are significant to the composer. Think of an important event in your life. How would you compose your piece to illustrate this event? Think like a storyteller and lead the audience in your emotional journey. Use the brainstorming chart to help guide you in your composition.
